Ciena Corporation CIEN and Arelion have accomplished a groundbreaking feat with the successful world’s first 1.6 terabits-per-second (Tb/s) wavelength data transmission in a live network field trial. This historic achievement, enabled by Ciena’s advanced WaveLogic 6 Extreme (WL6e) technology, occurred over a 470km route connecting Arelion’s key Points-of-Presence in Ashburn, Virginia, and Virginia Beach. The breakthrough has substantially enhanced network capacity and connectivity for Arelion’s North American operations.

Transforming Connectivity at the Speed of Light

Arelion, dedicated to resolving connectivity challenges for global enterprises reliant on digital infrastructure, provides essential IP services for seamless global Internet access. By leveraging high-speed Managed Optical Fiber Services and Wavelengths, Arelion serves a diverse range of clients from service providers to enterprises, ensuring the efficient delivery of critical content and applications to audiences worldwide.

The successful data transmission trial has bolstered the performance of Arelion’s optical transmission services, paving the way for the deployment of Ciena’s WL6e technology across its network. This strategic move is poised to meet the ever-increasing bandwidth demands driven by 5G, AI/ML applications, and cloud services, benefiting both wholesale and enterprise customers.

Driving Innovation Through Efficiency

With its innovative coherent digital signal processing capabilities, WL6e offers Arelion a significant leap in energy performance and operational efficiency. Ciena reported a 50% reduction in space and power consumption per bit, along with a 15% enhancement in spectral efficiency compared to preceding technologies. Empowered by WL6e, Arelion can now deliver multiple 400 and 800 gigabits-per-second (Gb/s) services, utilizing the 1.6 Tb/s line capacity to support higher traffic loads and faster connectivity across its network.

Ciena’s open, flexible 6500 Reconfigurable Line System (“RLS”) played a pivotal role in the successful trial. The RLS system streamlines network service provisioning and reconfiguration, aligning seamlessly with Arelion’s vision for open optical networking and next-generation coherent optic solutions that drive improvements in performance, energy efficiency, and cost-effectiveness.

Ciena stands out as a global leader in optical and routing systems, services, and automation software. The company’s commitment to building adaptive networks that cater to the evolving digital landscape underscores its importance in delivering enhanced connectivity experiences to users.
