Renowned research scientist, Andrej Karpathy, has announced his second departure from OpenAI, quelling any rumors of controversy surrounding his exit.
A Rollercoaster History: Karpathy, a founding member of OpenAI, initially left the company in 2017 to join Elon Musk’s Tesla as the head of the autopilot team. After a brief hiatus, he returned to OpenAI in 2023 before his recent departure.
OpenAI confirmed his departure and expressed gratitude for his contributions, choosing not to disclose the name of the individual assuming Karpathy’s responsibilities.
Karpathy’s updated bio on X — formerly Twitter — detailed his work on building an AI assistant at OpenAI.
Karpathy’s exit comes amidst a year of significant changes at OpenAI, including the temporary ousting and subsequent reinstatement of CEO Sam Altman.
Significance of the Departure: His previous departure from Tesla also led to speculation, with some suggesting he had left to pursue influencer status. His YouTube channel currently boasts over 339,000 subscribers and 13 videos.
Upon announcing his exit from OpenAI on X, a user inquired about potential future YouTube videos.
Another user suggested that he upload his videos directly on X, to which Elon Musk responded affirmatively, saying, “Yeah!”
