Tesla’s Paradigm-Shift: Unveiling the Cybertruck Innovation with Dry Cathode 4680 Cells

Revolutionizing the Automobile Industry

Tesla Inc. TSLA employee Cole Otto unveiled the first-ever Cybertruck embedded with dry cathode 4680 cells, signifying a pivotal shift in the realm of electric vehicles. The innovative technology is poised to bolster the stainless steel truck’s production profitability by year-end.

The Groundbreaking Event: Marking a historic moment, Otto took to LinkedIn, exclaiming, “Introducing the first-ever Dry Cathode Cybertruck!”

Capturing the essence of this milestone, the snapshot shared by Otto, a distinguished manufacturing engineer at Tesla specializing in 4680 cell development, depicted a cohesive team standing proudly in front of Tesla’s Fremont, California factory, flanked by two Cybertrucks.

At the core of the Cybertruck’s power lies the 4680 cells, which, until now, were manufactured utilizing a traditional “wet” process involving a toxic solvent for cathode production. Noteworthy progress unfolded in the second quarter, with Tesla’s production of 4680 cells surging by 50% compared to the first quarter.

The Strategic Implication: In a strategic move, Tesla initiated testing of its prototype Cybertruck equipped with in-house “dry” cathode 4680 cells in July with an end goal of achieving substantial cost reduction upon full-scale production.

Ambitions are high as Tesla’s Vice President of Vehicle Engineering, Lars Moravy, disclosed plans for the launch of production Cybertrucks furnished with dry cathode 4680 cells in the upcoming Q4, setting an optimistic tone for the future.

Transitioning from the prototype phase, Tesla commenced delivering its robust stainless steel Cybertruck towards the end of November, marking a significant leap in sales. Noteworthy data from Kelley Blue Book suggests a substantial increase, with Tesla selling 8,755 Cybertrucks in the second quarter in the U.S., a stark surge from the preceding quarter’s 2,803 units.
