What to Know For The Holiday-Shortened Trading Week Ahead

For the third-straight week, investors will have a holiday to plan around. With markets closed Monday in observance of Martin Luther King, Jr. Day, it puts more onus on the the next four trading days. Sure enough, the slate is packed; purchasing managers index data is on tap, earnings will keep on coming, and the usual jobs data will be closely monitored.

Blue-chip components 3M (MMM), American Express (AXP), Johnson & Johnson (JNJ), Procter & Gamble (PG), Travelers (TRV), and Verizon Communications (VZ) are all ready to report. Other notable names include American Airlines (AAL), Logitech (LOGI), Netflix (NFLX), and United Airlines (UAL).

Below is a list of key market events scheduled for the upcoming week. All economic dates listed below are tentative and subject to change.

The market is closed on on Monday, January 20 for Martin Luther King Jr. Day.

No economic data is scheduled for release on Tuesday, January 21.

Wednesday, January 22 features U.S. leading economic indicators.

Jobless claims data is slated for Thursday, January 23.

On Friday, January 24, investors will unpack existing home sales and consumer sentiment data, as well as the S&P services and manufacturing purchasing managers’ indexes (PMI).
